The power of ultrasound
The next-generation Blue and Green Hull Protection System uses ultrasound to create an environment on the sub-sea surface of a vessel's hull which prevents bio-film growth, and therefore the development of algae, weed and barnacles. With the algae unable to develop, the first link in the food chain is removed and larger, more complex organisms – slime, weed, worms, shellfish – are unable to colonise. The hull, keel, rudder, prop-shaft, propeller, thrusters, water intakes and through-hull transducers remain clean.
No contaminants or pollutants are used or created, and the ultrasonic pulses are harmless to fish and inaudible to marine mammals.
Our system is the product of extensive research and development. The device has been developed to recognise the characteristics of the hull to which it is attached and the water temperature surrounding it. It automatically adjusts to these variables, optimising effective anti-fouling.
Ultrasonic transducers create a finely tuned pulse of ultra high frequency sound waves in the water surrounding the hull. These waves cause cavitation within the cell walls of organisms that form a layer or ‘bio film’ around all objects immersed in water. Cavitation disrupts the cells’ structure but is harmless to a vessel’s gel-coat or other painted finishes.
